Reopening Celebrations

In spite of a pretty dreadful weather forecast, the sun shone on the righteous as they say, and the Grand Opening of Oystermouth Castle after the winter renovations and installation of the new visitor centre took place under sunny skies.

Roger Parmiter, of the Friends of Oystermouth Castle did the honours in cutting the ribbon (with a sword no less!) before leading the VIP guests on the first tour of the new features, including the fabulous grass balcony on the chapel level.

The Friends themselves worked tirelessly escorting some of the 5000 strong crowd around the castle.

On the green below, reenactors from Gwerin y Gwyr, the Collegiate of Knights Templar and Milwr Morgannwg laid on demonstrations as display along with falconry from Perriswood and musical entertainment from Pavane Medieval Music and the Dave Cottle Jazz Band (not at the same time!). Oystermouth Primary School also laid on a performance, as did Inner State Theatre and Cover to Cover Story Telling.

If you didn’t make it, don’t worry – the castle will now be open from Monday 18th July through to the end of September. Come and see us!

The Friends of Oystermouth Castle celebrated another succesful summer season with a buffet at the Langland Bay Golf Club. Also invited were representatives from Swansea City Council, the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust and Regia Anglorum whose support for the Castle is much appreciated.

Lovely location for summer buffet.

Outdoor Theatre at the Castle

A performance of Dickens’ Great Expectation will take place in the castle ground on the evenings of 16th and 17th of June.

See the designs for “Alina’s Chapel” window

As part of Swansea Council’s ongoing enhancements of Oystermouth Castle a visitor facility is being created in the castle’s chapel and students of Swansea Metropolitan University’s Welsh School of Architectural Glass have been asked to submit their design contributions to a glass showpiece for the facility.

The Mumbles Development Trust is staging an exhibition of the students’ designs in the Winter Gallery on Dunns Lane in Mumbles.
